Ensayos honors the traditional custodians of the lands and waters where we roam and learn.

For @turbatol, the Australian pod created a gift o For @turbatol, the Australian pod created a gift of incense that is medicine for feeling the peatlands of Minjerribah. Leaves, bark and essential oil from swamp paperbark (Melaleuca quinquenervia), grasstree resin, jelly bush honey (from Leptospermum species), charcoal and water drawn from the Island’s aquifer.

Similar to much of the Australian landscape, fire has been a part of fen development on the sand islands for millennia. Many of the plants and animals have evolved to not only survive fire but depend on it for their persistence. This incense also carries deep respect for jarlo (fire) and the revival of Quandamooka fire management practices on the island - practices of slow, cool burnings and custodians walking with the flames.

Standing tall in many of the island’s peatlands Standing tall in many of the island’s peatlands is Ungaire, a reed and cultural weaving fibre with distinct pink and cream hues. The Carmichael women have been working alongside their family, Elders, and community members on the regeneration of Quandamooka weaving practices. In honour of their heritage and the plant communities of the peatlands Quandamooka artist, Sonja Carmichael, adapted traditional weaving techniques over a glass vessel designed by artist Caitlin Franzmann and hand blown by glass artist Jarred Wright. This forms the carrier bag for the Australian pod’s gift of scent to the Chilean Pavilion at Venice Biennale.

The Ungaire used was collected from a sand mine site in 2019, the year mining activities on the Island substantially ceased.

//
